JOB DESCRIPTION 



Title:     Special Education Coordinator - Montezuma County 

 

Length Of Work Year:  200 days

 

Salary Range:  Salary is dependent on experience and education. 

 

Starting Date:  2023-2024 School Year

 

Philosophy:

The Special Education Coordinator provides leadership in proving support, supervision, and implementation of high quality special education programs and services under the direction of the Director of Exceptional Student Services. 

 

Education/Certification:

  • Master’s Degree in Special Education or related field in Special Education
  • Possesses or eligible to possess Colorado Special Education Director Administrator License
  • Successful Exceptional Student Services experience required and administrative experience preferred

 

Reports to:

     Director Exceptional Student Services

 

General responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate and informally instruct local special education teachers in procedures for assessment, interpretation, and prescription of diagnostic assessment instruments.
  • Assist special education teachers and regular education teachers with the implementation of curriculum, test, and assignment modifications. Use of curriculum, test, and assignment modifications. Use of curriculum-based assessment and instructional techniques.
  • Oversee transition services.
  • Review overall special education programs and equipment needs annually and complete requests for new equipment, supplies, and in-service training sessions. Assist in ordering and dispersing special education materials needed to evaluate, assess and instruct in the various special education settings.
  • Attend, provide, and /or coordinate in-services and other meetings, when appropriate. Plan and coordinate 2-4 in-services per year for SPED professional staff development.
  • Coordinates extended school year programs and supports transition planning
  • Collect data, coordinate planning, disseminate information, recommend proposals, and formulate proposed policies, plans, and programs to meet the needs of students with disabilities, and provides supervision of BOCES programs in our member districts.
  • Supports and coaches general and special services staff to provide effective interventions, specialized services, accommodations, and differentiation to maximize opportunities to increase success.
  • Maintains compliance with the applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations 
  • Assists in the hiring and supervision of special education staff, including those employed by member districts 
  • Facilitate parent and family connections and advocacy through regular parent group meetings and outreach communications
  • Identifies and provides support and resources for professional development for staff serving ESS children
  • Provide direct and indirect collaborative consultation services to administrators, board members, teachers, paraprofessionals, students, parents, and related agencies.
  • Update procedural manual quarterly
  • Assist special education teachers in developing appropriate goals and objectives based on student needs and strengths.
  • Redesign BOCES special education forms as needed or assigned.
  • Attend Special Education Director's Regional meeting.
  • Perform any other duties that, from time to time, are determined by the Executive ESS Director

Specific Duties as part of the Administrative Leadership Team:

  • Be responsible for the activities to be in compliance with all state and federal regulations as they pertain to the identification of and services for students identified with disabilities.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of all ESS programs and periodically report to the Board.
  • Supervise and support the BOCES staff in member districts, and indirectly supervise all other ESS staff. 

 

Qualifications:

  • 3 or more years of experience in the field of Special Education  
  • Experience in leadership positions
  • Demonstrated Leadership Ability
  • Communication skills-both oral and written
  • Knowledge of Colorado BOCES Statutes, organization, and operation
  • Knowledge of special education issues and requirements
  • Knowledge and experience in instructional leadership: academic standards, assessment, accountability, and accreditation
  • Broad understanding of the needs of special populations of students
  • Understanding of issues that are unique to rural education
