INSTRUCTIONAL TEACHER ASSISTANT/PARA-EDUCATOR
The Instructional Teacher Assistant's goal is to assist certified personnel in achieving district,
school and classroom goals and objectives. The Instructional Teacher Assistant is evaluated by the
classroom teacher with input from the school principal. The Instructional Teacher Assistant is
evaluated by the classroom teacher with input of school principal.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Associates Degree in an educationally related field or technology and/or the successful
passing of the State Para-Professional Exam. (No experience required with either the AA
Degree or the successful passing of the State Exam).
2. Ability to understand and work effectively with students, teachers and other employees.
3. Ability to establish good rapport with students, ability to understand their needs and social
development.
4. Ability to give clear instructions to students.
5. Ability to remain flexible.
6. Good interpersonal skills.
7. Ability to work in harmony with other people.
8. Hold a substitute license to cover classroom for on call building necessities/emergencies.
9. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Instructional Teacher Assistant's responsibilities include:
1. Administering, scoring, and recording student achievement and diagnostic tests as the
teacher directs for individual students. Checking notebooks, correcting papers and
supervising testing and makeup work as assigned by the teacher.
2. Working with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of
material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
3. Assisting the teacher in devising special strategies for enforcing material or skills based on
a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests and abilities.
4. Guiding independent study, enrichment work, remedial work set up, assist with large group
activities such as drill work, reading aloud and storytelling.
5. Checking notebooks, correcting papers and supervising testing and makeup work as
assigned by the teacher.
6. Serving as a source of information and helping any substitute teacher assigned in the
absence of the regular teacher.
7. Alerting the regular teacher to any problems or special information about an individual
student.
8. Maintaining the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about
students as is expected of fully licensed teachers.
9. Checking and recording student attendance, filing student's information and work samples,
distributing and collecting workbooks, papers, and other materials for instructions.
10. Reading to students, listening to students read, and participating in other forms of oral
communication with students.
11. Performing assistive duties as assigned by supervising teacher i.e. make copies/file. Helping
students with their clothing and other personal needs as necessary.
12. Keeping bulletin boards and other classroom learning displays up to date.
13. Operating and caring for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes,
including technology, reading programs, and other assistive technology.
14. Attending in-services and continuing education as determined by Site Principal and
Supervising Teacher.
15. Assisting with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play
periods, field trips and other duties as assigned.
16. Performing other duties as assigned by the building principal, designee or assigned teacher.
REPORTS TO: To the supervising teacher/site principal.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 157 days per school year
