Southwest Open School
The Elective Instructor at Southwest Open School is responsible for designing and delivering engaging elective courses that expand students’ interests, creativity, and real-world skills. Electives may include areas such as outdoor education, technology, arts, career exploration, or other experiential learning opportunities.
The instructor works collaboratively with staff to integrate project-based and experiential learning while supporting the school’s mission of developing strong academic, character, and lifelong learning skills.
Experience working with high school aged students
Colorado teaching license preferred (or willingness to obtain appropriate licensure)
Pass criminal background check
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Experience with experiential learning, project-based learning, or hands-on instruction preferred
Plan and implement student-centered elective courses based on Colorado State Standards when applicable and SWOS best practices.
Design hands-on, experiential, and project-based learning opportunities that engage students in creative exploration and real-world problem solving.
Provide instruction that builds critical thinking, collaboration, and practical life skills.
Develop interdisciplinary connections between elective content and other academic areas when appropriate.
Create a safe, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment for all learners.
Provide necessary accommodations and modifications for the growth and success of all students.
Implement IEPs, RtI plans, and 504 accommodations as necessary.
Promote an understanding and appreciation for diverse cultures and perspectives.
Develop an understanding of and practice the SWOS Design Principles.
Work to understand, practice, promote, and teach the principles of SWOSology (Character/SEL skills).
Serve as an Advisor for a group of students to support SWOS culture, academic progress, and post-secondary readiness.
Collaborate with staff, families, and community partners to support student success.
Communicate effectively with students, families, and staff.
Participate in professional development and continuous growth related to instruction and curriculum development.
Work with other teachers to integrate elective learning opportunities into broader school projects and intensives.
Plan and accompany students on field work outings, experiential learning trips, or community projects when applicable.
Participate in standardized testing as required and use data to inform instruction when applicable.
Assist with school events, student exhibitions, or project presentations.
Other duties as assigned.
