Position Summary: The expectations of our coaches are to model and demand the following traits for their team: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship.
Job Goal: To carry out the aims and objectives of the sports program. To instruct athletes in individual and team fundamentals, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same time, the coach must instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in the student athletes. To upgrade his/her knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc.
Qualifications:
1. Previous coaching experience in assigned sport is desirable.
2. Has knowledge and background in the assigned sport.
3. Has a thorough knowledge of all the athletic policies approved by the Montezuma Cortez Re-1 Schools’ Board of Education and is responsible for their implementation.
4. Has knowledge of the existing system, state, and league regulations; implements same consistently.
5. Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers to all student and parent requests or grievances through proper channels. Is aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance.
6. Maintains discipline and works to increase morale and cooperation within the school sports program.
7.Observes all district policies and procedures.
8. The coach must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions.
9. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Administrative Duties:
- Assists in scheduling, providing transportation to tournaments and special sport events.
- Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times. Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees.
- Provides documentation to the athletic director to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
- Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
Student Responsibilities:
- Serves as a mentor to each athlete to promote the development and demonstration in student athletes the character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
- Gives constant attention to a student athlete’s grades and conduct.
- By his/her presence at all practices games and while traveling, provides assistance, guidance and safeguards for each participant.
- Provides training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete who is considered a participant.
- Initiates programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
- Completes paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submits to athletic office within 24 hours.
- Directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
- Determines discipline, delineates procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary and contracts parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
- Assists athletes in their college or advanced educational selection.
Equipment and Facilities:
- Accountable for all equipment. Collects the cost of any equipment lost or not returned. Arranges for issuing and storing of equipment and submits an annual inventory and current records concerning same.
- Monitors equipment rooms and coaches’ offices and authorizes who may enter.
- Permits the athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times.
- Examines and checking on general cleanliness of the facility.
- Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
- Secures all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty.
- Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.
Program Responsibilities:
- Makes press releases and school announcements.
- Instructs team members to change the rules and teaches team to follow those rules.
- Maintains a record of team statistics and requirements for lettering.
- Attends all staff meetings and carries out scouting assignments.
- Arrives early enough before practice, contests, and meetings to adequately prepare and remains long enough afterwards to help players with problems or to become involved in staff discussions.
- Demonstrates professionalism at all times. In the instance of diverse opinions, feedback is shared outside of watching students and parents. Never criticizes, admonishes, or argues with any staff member within ears or eyes of players or parents.
- Strives to improve skills by attending clinics and using available resources.
- Attends most of the competitions and/or games, when possible, of other teams in the program.
- Performs other duties that are consistent with the nature of the position.
Essential Physical Demands:
- Constant lifting 5 to 20 pounds

- Occasional crawling, sitting, stooping.
Supervisory Duties: Athletes and teams assigned to him/her and assumes supervising control over all athletes in the program when such control is needed.
